According to David Kolb (2015)*, the impetus for learning occurs when a new experience is presented. There are a number of strategies that an educator may employ to support learning based on the level of the experience and the individual learning style of the learner.

  1. Stage: Concrete Experience
Definition: Full involvement in new here-and-now experiences.
    Teaching Strategies:

    • Simulations
    • Case studies
    • Field trips
    • Real experiences
    • Demonstrations

  2. Stage: Observations & reflection
Definition: Reflection on and observation of the learner’s experiences from may perspectives.
    Teaching Strategies:

    • Discussions
    • Small groups
    • Buzz groups
    • Designated observers

  3. Stage: Abstract conceptualization
Definition: Creation of abstract concepts that integrate the learners’ observations into logically sound generalizations…theories.
    Teaching Strategies:

    • Sharing content

  4. Stage: Active Experimentation
Definition: Testing implications of new concepts in new situations. Using these theories to make decisions and solve problems.
    Teaching Strategies:

    • Laboratory experience
    • On-the-job experience
    • Internship
    • Practice sessions
